Overview

Some Astronomical Catalogues on VizieR contains OIFITS files.

OiDB provides a way to semi-automatically analyze and import the data from these catalogs.

Data submission

Given a catalog designation (a hierarchical identifier assigned when the catalog is accepted, for example 'J/A+A/558/A149'), the application retrieves the ReadMe associated with the catalog.

This file follows the Standard Description for Astronomical Catalogues. It is roughly parsed for identifying relevant information such as associated bibcode, update date, title...

The data files are discovered by browsing the catalog directory through FTP in search for OIFITS files.

Data mapping

Granules are extracted from the OIFITS files with OIFitsViewer and post-processed to include catalog data.

A collection with an id equal to the catalog designation is created. Its contents is:

  • the name is the catalog designation
  • the title is the catalog title from the first line of the catalog description
  • the description is the catalog abstract
  • the date the catalog was last modified
  • the description of any article associated with the catalog (bibcode, title, authors and keywords)

The following rules are followed for completing granules with catalog data:

  • the granule is associated with a collection named after the catalog designation (obs_collection)
  • the calibration level is set the to 3 (calib_level)
  • the creator name (obs_creator_name) and datapi is set with the name of the first author from the catalog description
  • the release date (obs_release_date) is set to the last modification date of the catalog (last line in the catalog description)
  • the bibliographic reference (bib_reference) is set to the bibcode of the first paper in the catalog description

Usage

The user provides the catalog designation on the Submit new data page of OiDB. The extracted collection and granules are then displayed on a validation form.

The collection data can not be modified.

The user can modify the target, instrument and instrument modes of each granule with suggestions derived from the respective values in the source OIFits file.

Notes

At the moment, each time a catalog is imported, any previous collection is overwritten and new granules are added to the collection (the previous granules are not deleted) eventually creating duplicated granules.

The validation of target, instrument and instrument mode is not enforced.

There is no automatic discovery of catalog containing OIFITS files.

The publisher metadata should be associated to VizieR in the futur.
